How does one review a movie that probably has the most predictable story line? A story line that is done and dusted- A underdog who has his eyes set on glory, but his sachai (reality) and sapna (dreams) are not in tune. But the underdog beats all odds and achieves his dreams. But Gully Boy is not here to sell its script. In fact the movie goes beyond that realm.
Meet Murad, an aspiring rapper from Mumbai’s Dharavi- a slum area. While Murad has big dreams, his life as a slum dweller always pulls him back. But his life changes once he meets MC Sher. From a shy boy to a roaring rapper, Murad’s transformation forms the arc of the story.
Super enthusiastic Ranveer Singh as a restrained rapper is great with his performance as Murad, but it’s his co-star and onscreen lover Alia Bhatt aka Safeena who lights up the movie. But the one cast member to watch out for is Siddhant Chaturvedi, his performance as MC Sher is spectacular, from taking Murad under his wings to transforming him into Gully Boy and then watching his protege spread his wings is a treat indeed.
Songs are the backbone of this movie. Every song complements the story telling. Some of the rap battles are very slick. Director Zoya Akhtar deserves special mention for beautifully weaving the magic of Mumbai into the script.
The movie is definitely watchable, you will no doubt root for the underdog and go home inspired .
