WHAT’S THE CONTROVERSY?
In his interview when he was questioned over the airstrikes, this is what the Prime Minister had to say
‘Around 9-9:30 pm I reviewed the situation. I reviewed it again at 12, the problem in front of us was that weather got bad immediately. If you recollect, it was raining heavily. I am surprised those pundits who abuse me didn’t think of this. I am revealing this for the first time, around 12, I don’t know what our officers will feel, it crossed our minds as to what we would do in this weather, it was cloudy, we wondered if we could go. Experts suggested we move the dates. There were two things on my mind, one secrecy, it was a secret until then, but if there was any looseness in our secrecy then we can’t carry this out, we won’t be able to carry this out, secondly I told, I am not a person who knows science, but I said it is cloudy, it is raining, there is a benefit, that we can escape the RADAR, I said I have raw wisdom, but clouds can be beneficial, everyone was in a turmoil as to what to do. Then I ultimately said go ahead it is cloudy. They went ahead. So around 1:30 the movement started, our time was around 2:55, in the planes, that was the best time. We have to keep the movement of satellite in mind, so that are not in under its purview, so under this calculation 2:55 was the correct time, around 3:20 I got a report that everything went well.’
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister
FACT CHECK: CAN BAD WEATHER IMPACT RADAR?
according to ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA ‘What distinguishes radar from optical and infrared sensing devices is its ability to detect faraway objects under adverse weather conditions and to determine their range, or distance, with precision.’
HOW HAS THE OPPOSITION REACTED?
There was a massive furore online over Prime Minister’s comment, while questioned the need to reveal the details of a sensitive operation such as an airstrike for an interview, others used it to poke fun at the Prime Minister
While political ramifications of this controversy will be revealed in the future, the big question is – Should the PM have shown restraint while speaking on such an important issue during election season?
