Prayers held in Turkey’s Hagia Sophia after 86 Years

Muslim faithfuls held prayers at Turkey’s landmark Hagia Sophia after 86 years. Hagia Sophia was Christendom’s most significant cathedrals, which later turned into a mosque and museum before its reconversion into mosque.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan led the inaugural prayers inside the sixth-century monument along with 500 other dignitaries.

Turkish media reported that worshipers broke through one police checkpoint and ignored social distancing practices while holding prayers at Hagia Sophia . On the other hand, Orthodox church leaders are likely to observe “a day of mourning” over the development.

Earlier this month President Erdogan issued a decree restoring the iconic building as a mosque after a Turkish high court ruled that the Hagia Sophia had been illegally made into a museum 86 years ago.

The structure, listed as UNESCO World Heritage site, is called ”The Grand Hagia Sophia Mosque.”
