UNITED NATIONS: A GRAND SUCCESS OR A HISTORIC FAILURE?

World Affairs

At a time when Hong Kong is seeking Independence from China, when Gun violence is at its peak in America, when Inflation is soaring in France, when Britain’s future is uncertain due to Brexit, when Ukraine is protesting against Russia, the 5 ‘super powers’ chose to ignore their own problems & discussed the Kashmir crisis at the behest of Pakistan’s all weather friend China.

United Nations Security Council discussed the Kashmir Issue behind closed doors, and as expected, Pakistan & China failed miserably as the 4 other countries backed India. But the question is what gives the international body the legitimacy to interfere in India’s internal matter & secondly, why do they selectively choose matters? Why didn’t they discuss issues plaguing their own country?

Historic Spillover

The year was 1945 and the world had just witnessed the Second World War. The destruction caused by the war was massive. 85 million lives were lost and close to $1.6 trillion was gutted in the war.

The world had never witnessed a tragedy of this scale. The existing ‘League of Nations’ had failed to check the ambitions of Hitler and Mussolini. 50 countries lead by the USA then decided to form a body that could maintain peace and harmony in the world.

On June 26, 1945 these 50 countries ratified a new inter-govermental body which came into existence months later in October 1945. United Nations was created heralding a new era in the world history.

Today United Nations is considered as the most successful trans-national body but its critics think otherwise. Let’s take a look if the body has lived up to its motive of securing international security.

A Success Story or a massive failure?

The biggest impact UN has had is in the sector of healthcare. WHO successfully eradicated Small Pox and the UN health care agency also successfully removed the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. In the last 70 years health care indicators like Maternal Mortality Rate and Infant Mortality Rate has drastically reduced all thanks to the persistent efforts of WHO.

In the field of Culture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites have helped in the preservation and protection of unique culture and natural heritage of various countries.

Many however consider the United Nations a monumental failure. Apart from failing to tackle the Kashmir and the Palestine issue. The peace keeping force of the United Nations failed to prevent the Srebrenica Massacre and the 1994 Rwanda Massacre. Despite allegedly having prior information, UN was unable to stop the killings.

The Oil for Food program was meant to help the cash strapped Iraq, but soon UN officials were accused of bribery and till date the United Nations has refused to make the internal audits public

The failure to check the growth of terrorism in countries like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan is also considered as UN’s biggest failure.

United Nations Security Council has been accused of creating a new world power. China, US, UK, France and Russia being the permanent members have been accused of meddling in the functioning of other countries. They have blocked the entry of new permanent members, plus Arab and African countries have been poorly represented in the council.

PAKISTANI PM FACES GLOBAL EMBARRASSMENT AT UNITED STATES THRICE

NEWS, World Affairs

Ahead of Pak PM Imran Khan’s visit to US, the Pakistani administration went all out to portray this visit as a major diplomatic coup by their ‘enigmatic leader’. The country wanted to peddle Imran Khan as the emerging world leader. But little did Pakistan realise that this visit would turn into their biggest nightmare.

This is Imran’s first visit to USA and his upcoming meet with Donald Trump is being hyped by the Pakistani media as a big win for the Islamic Nation.

But ever since Imran Khan has set his foot in America he has only faced global embarrassment, not once but thrice.

Numero Uno: ‘Grand Welcome’

Imran Khan’s first snub was at his arrival. Surprisingly or not so surprisingly, no official from US Government was present to receive him when he arrived. A ceremonial welcome is usually reserved for foreign head of state.

Imran Khan who was accompanied by his Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood and his Commerce Advisor Abdul Razzak and was welcomed by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Numero Dos: the Letters of Dissemt

If ‘no welcome’ wasn’t enough, Imran was embarrassed yet again after 10 members of US Congress wrote to US President Donald to lodge a protest against Human Rights abuses in Pakistan & forced conversions of Hindus in the Islamic Nation at the time of his visit. These US leaders also added that ‘Pakistani Government was terrorising Sindh through enforced disappearances’

Not only did Imran Khan face dissent from US, 16 members of European Parliament wrote to Trump asking the US leader to ensure deteriorating situation in Balochistan was addressed.

Numero Tres: Anti-Pak slogans at Imran event

Pak media touted Imran Khan’s speech at Washington DC as the spectacle in the US, but embarrassment was in store for Pakistan when Baloch activists disrupted Imran’s speech and raised Anti-Pak slogans

Clearly Pakistan’s desperate bid to propel Imran Khan has failed, but the real question is, will Imran admit to his failures or will the pak leader remain blind to his shortcomings?

World Affairs

A week after United States designated North Korea as a state sponsor of terror, Kim Jong-Un dared Uncle Sam and fired a ballistic missile into Japan sea.

South Korea’s army confirmed that the missile was fired from an area north of Pyongyang.

The trajectory of the missile is unknown and the US and South Korea are investigating into this.

The launch is the second intermediate ballistic missile launched by North Korea in the recent past.

TRUMP: WE WILL TAKE CARE OF IT

US President Donald Trump spoke minutes after the launched, however his response seem measured. He simply said “We will take care of it. It is a situation that we will handle”

MISSILE LANDS IN JAPAN SEA, NO DAMAGE REPORTED

North Korea confirmed that it had ‘successfully launched: a new type of ICBM called the Hwasong 15. However no damage was reported from this missile that was launched from the western coast of North Korea .

UN AMBASSADORS CONDEMN NKOREA MISSILE
UN ambassadors from Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom slammed North Korea over it’s intercontinental ballistic missile.

U.N. Security Council President said that he was in contact with key U.N. members after this development.

Meanwhile Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe added that his country would no longer tolerate the actions of North Korea and pressed for sanctions against the rogue nation.

This is the second ICBM launch by North Korea in less than 10 weeks, is the country, backed by the China seems to be getting more emboldened. Will the world let the Maverick dictator continue to set terms, or will the UNSC and Atlantic Countries stop this nuclear war drama?

The revolution is a dictatorship of the exploited against the exploiters.

A revolution is a struggle to the death between the future and the past.

I am not a communist and neither is the revolutionary movement.

Men do not shape destiny, Destiny produces the man for the hour.

I am Fidel Castro and we have come to liberate Cuba.

I can assure you that my first and foremost interest is my country.
